Gelatinous cubes are distant relatives of slimes, having adapted to live in man-made dungeons, functioning to clean the walls and floors of debris. They're probably the result of a biomancer's work to produce an automatic cleaning system for their dungeon.

They generally grow just large enough to fill the most common passageways in their home turf. Sometimes they're not actually cubes.
