Spell Books

Spell Books

Spell books come in many forms in this setting, ranging from professionally copied volumes to hand-written works copied from various sources by the owner.

Since spells in this setting are not skills, this works differently. Each will occupy one side of a normal-size sheet of paper for every 20 points of spell.

Blank Books

This table provides statistics for blank versions of the books from p. DF4:13 and DF8:27-28. Each page is one side of a sheet of paper bound into the book.

Size Page Count Cost Weight
Handbook1 40 $2.50 1.5 lbs.
Primer 80 $5 3 lbs.
Textbook 160 $10 6 lbs.
Thesis 320 $20 12 lbs.

1 This is a new type, a small, cheap notebook. This is often used for travel-size spell books.

When building professionally bound books, use the table to determine the minimum size of book required for the spells contained within. This is only for the sake of determining weight. The cost is based only on the spells themselves.

Notes on Production Quality

Material changes (like Dwarven and Faerie) affect the cost of both the book itself and the individual spells.

If the spells are written out by the buyer, time required to write is multiplied by 1 + CF if the material requires unusual writing methods (engraving, carving, painting, etc.). It may also require skill rolls.

Fine and Very Fine can optionally indicate that the writer is taking twice the normal space to make the text easier to read. This provides +1 (+2 for Very Fine) to skill with the contained spells if the user spreads the book out and consults it while casting. This usually requires a book stand, unless the spell has no gesture or material components.

Most personal spell books use the Loose Sheets bookbinding option from DF8:28, as this allows the user to rearrange and/or insert new pages, as desired.

Enchantments

Many of the standard armor enchantments should be allowed on the covers of books, since a book's cover is a simple form of armor.

In addition, the Shrinking Item enchantment is quite a common choice for travel spell books.

Common Spell Books

This is a table of the most common professionally-bound spell books available on the market. These spells are priced at 20% off for the fact that they come as a package deal.

1 There's one spell every page (with ample room for notes), twenty-five blank pages at the back and all blank spaces have lines for notes.
