Isle of the Three Kings

The Isle of the Three Kings is on the southwestern edge of the Archipelago, with three small kingdoms that have been in a nearly constant state of war with each other since the Old Kingdom broke up. It's temperate and full of woodlands.

It's also an island of prophecy, as a local oddity in the background mana level has made Divination magic quite easy to use. For the purpose of casting these spells, the island is a High Mana Area and it gives a +5 to any rolls involving them.

According to a prophecy by a long dead wizard whose predictions always came true, the island's kingdoms will be united into a single kingdom. This is to be accomplished by a ruler that can rightly claim blood of all three royal families. About two decades after this wizard died, the three kings began marrying their daughters off to royals of the other kingdoms.

Things went swimmingly and their great grandchildren could all claim to have royal blood from all three families. Finally, the first of these came of age. With a little prodding from his grandfather, he boldly made the claim that he was destined to rule the island.

He was promptly assassinated the next day. Each one of the kingdoms want their own 'chosen one' to be the ruler. This has sparked a long-running feud that lasts to this day.

The three kingdoms are quite evenly matched and war has done little but decimate the island's population.

Currently, they have achieved an uneasy truce, of sorts. They don't fight in open war anymore, instead using spies and assassins almost exclusively, with the threat of real war if someone goes too far.

The villagers of all three kingdoms hope and pray that no one will go too far.

The names of the three kingdoms are Belleca, Hathewald and Vawdreya.

The Kingdoms

Belleca

Belleca is the southern kingdom and the most militaristic of the three.

The royal family leads from the front lines and are all very talented at warfare. The throne is passed down to the most effective military leader of all the King's sons. Except during times of war on the island, they demonstrate their talent by working as Mercenaries. As such, the royal family is on good terms with many mercenary companies and most of their standing army is hired help.

The King is William Bellec, a powerful bear of a man. He has quite a number of enemies, both in and out of the kingdom. His network of allies is equally as staggering, however. His mercenary friends can easily provide him with almost any number of extra troops. In a pinch, they'll even put him in touch with assassins. He is currently offering a small fortune to any assassin that could bring him the head of Hathewald's King.

The Queen is Lady Elisabeth Vanessa Gloriana Vawdrey-Bellec. She has been applying her political acumen for the betterment of the kingdom and has already defeated several plots aimed at her husband by those that would seek to remove him from the throne. She is secretly aiding her father, the King of Vawdreya, by feeding him information on the kingdom. She keeps in touch with her father by way of his covert agents.

The King employs a Grand Vizier named Ulrich Malheur. He is a powerful wizard originally of Hathewald royal descent. He was disowned for a lack of magical talent and took the name Malheur. Being spurned in this manner gave him great determination to master the magical arts. He joined the Wizard's Guild, and with proper tutelage, he flourished, becoming very talented. He returned and challenged his father, failing miserably. On top of this, his father scarred him for life by magically tearing his eye from it's socket. Angry over this loss, Ulrich turn to Belleca and offered to serve the King as an advisor. The King accepted and Ulrich has been his loyal servant ever since. He takes great joy in aiding one of his father's greatest enemies.

Hathewald

Hathewald is the northwest kingdom and it's royal family has a strong gift for magic.

Hathewald royals unable to demonstrate any kind of magical skill by the age of twelve are disowned. Their children fear such a fate and do everything in their power to master this skill. As such, when they reach adulthood, they are uniformly quite powerful wizards. The kingdom is always handed down to the strongest wizard of the King's sons.

Any male of royal blood (disowned or not) is able to challenge the King for the throne. This takes the form of a heavily ritualized magical duel. This is even sometimes to the death, depending on the strength or weakness of familial feeling.

The royals use their magical talents and the unusual mana of the island to spy on the other two kingdoms. Their women are especially talented diviners.

Hathewald uses magically summoned and bound beings to do their fighting for them. They have many wizards at their disposal for this purpose.

The King is Luke Hathewald. He is an intolerable tyrant, with a terrifying temper. Strangely, it would seem that his magical powers grow when he loses his temper. Tasks that are difficult for him while he's calm become nearly as easy as breathing when he is angry. This has helped him retain the throne in the face of all challengers, as he hates being challenged.

The Queen is Renata Bellec-Hathewald. She is a skilled military leader and has taken to serving in Hathewald's army as the chief strategist. She clearly loves the King, despite his flaws. She would be willing to lay her life down for him, if necessary.

Vawdreya

Vawdreya is the northeast kingdom and it's royal family has a talent for political maneuvering and covert manipulation.

The royal family is protected and served by a branch of their family that broke off many generations ago. This branch trains from birth to serve the royal family. To this end, they train in a multitude of skills. Some serve as diplomats and some as body-guards, but most serve as covert agents.

The King is Nathaniel Vawdrey. He is a political schemer of the highest order and very good at manipulating others into doing his bidding. His pawns usually think they're doing things for their own reasons. Vawdreya is currently enjoying a time of relative peace, as he recently tricked the other two kingdoms into greater hostilities with each other.

The Queen is Lady Beatrix Hathewald-Vawdrey. She is a powerful wizard in her own right and just as the rest of the women of her family, a very talented diviner.

The King employs a Fool named Monte Higdon. He is not what he appears to be. He is in fact, the King's Spy Master, in charge of all covert agents. He plays the part of a Fool to the hilt in order to keep others off-guard. He has spent a life-time perfecting this role.
